    Project 365 - A Photo A Day.

    G'day Guys,

I decided at the last minute to start a daily photo project for 2009... the decision was made at 8pm on the 1st of Jan :)

I figured I'd use my Zenfolio account to upload the images into a gallery & it would work fine.  Most people who do this use Flickr... which as you know, is rubbish.

With the new commenting system + RSS, Collections & Galleries this has worked out far better than I expected.

    http://photos.panedia.com/p1013038409

I have a collection called Project 365, into which I make monthy galleries.  At the moment I only have January 2009. Then each photo is uploaded for the day of the month.  In January so far we have images 1-12, which equate to January 1st - 12th.  I also name each image according to the day/month before I upload & have the function to change the filename into the image title turned on. I only discovered that function yesterday, after asking about it last year sometime  :)   (Quick addition, would be nice if we could have it ignore the file extension... ie .jpg )

I had a friend say it would be good if he could get an RSS feed to the Project 365....  I went in to check on RSS feeds and found them already operating... just needed to turn them on.

So Zenfolio is great for this project, quick & easy to use,  with fantastic gallery displays.

The only thing I'll need to do a little more thinking on is the RSS.  At the moment I'm using it per gallery, but once January is over, anyone with my Project 365 feed will see no more content. We don't seem to be able to RSS a Collection and even if we could, it would likely only update when a new gallery enters the collection... ie once per month.  I could put all of 2009 in one gallery, since the images do have the date title... that would work too. Thoughts anyone?

     Thanks,

    Aaron Spence

Well, I don't know much about the RSS feed issue, but I love your idea of one picture a day. I think we get too caught up in trying to find that perfect shot that we forget about the simple joy of shooting!  So, if you don't mind, I am going to follow your suit and produce a least "one a day"!!

    Re: Project 365 - A Photo A Day.

    G'day Nevessa,

Project 365 is not my original idea, people have been doing it for a few years now.  Here's some history http://photojojo.com/content/tutorials/project-365-take-a-photo-a-day/

I can say that I'm enjoying it much more than I thought I would.  It's very refreshing to have to think about a photo every day. To take a camera almost everywhere and really look at everything I see... even if I don't end up shooting it.  The other aspect I'm enjoying is the record of our lives.  For example, if I didn't have the shot of the strangler fig in the rainforst - http://photos.panedia.com/p1013038409/hf314531#hf314531 I'd have already forgotten the great time we had on that walk only 10 days ago. Sure it would still be in my memory, but I'd not think of it.

You can check out other peoples projects here:  http://search.twitter.com/search?q=twitter365
    and  http://www.flickr.com/groups/project_365/

    Thanks, Aaron.

    Re: Project 365 - A Photo A Day.

For anyone intersted I've come up with a workable solution to the RSS feeds.

I've set up a free Project 365 Feedburner account for my feed, I've included the feedburner link prominently in the Collection & Gallery descriptions http://photos.panedia.com/p1013038409

Each month when I start a new folder I'll update the Zenfolio RSS feed into my Feedburner account & any followers will then get updates for the next gallery.

It's not a perfect solution, but the best amoung thoughts I've had.

    Thanks,

    Aaron Spence

    Re: Project 365 - A Photo A Day.

Decided to take the plunge and start a Project 365. My Day 1 is January 15, 2009. Having fun so far. If your interested URL: Picture-A-Day (PAD) for 2009. Aaron thanks for RSS feedlink. I'll give it a try when I have time. If anyone else starts a PAD site, let us know so that we can follow along.

Zenfolio Team: Could you add a category "PAD"?

    Thanks,

    Lee

    G'day All,

Here's another cool thing you can do with your Project 365 images.  Make them into an online book... enjoy.

    Hi Aaron,

Love your book, it’s exceptionally well done. Great mixture of photographs and personal thoughts. Would you mind sharing what software you’re using to create your book?

    Thanks,

     Lee

I think they've already added one.  If you look under "Artistic" it should come up as one of the subcategories, as "Picture a Day (PAD)".

    G'day Lee,

Thanks, glad you like the book.

I use Adobe Indesign CS3 to do my print design work.  It's certainly overkill to do up a book like I have though.  All you need is a bit of software that will let you specify a book size/format and put images & text on the page.  I've created the simple white border/drop shadow effect for my images in Indesign, but I suspect most consumer level programs would have a preset for a similar thing.  You could also do this to the photos before dropping them into a desktop publishing program via photoshop etc.

Maybe software like Word, or OpenOffice (free version of Office) would allow you to do something similar?

    Thanks, Aaron.

That book is wonderful!  I've been turning my PAD photos into a blog (though I've fallen woefully behind in getting them up).  It's interesting comparing the photos I've been taking for the project (I have the additional constraint that I'm taking two pictures each day, one with my Pentax, and one with an Argus C3) with the ones I've been putting up here.  Rather different styles, it turns out - the PAD photos feel more like better-done versions of the sort of pictures I shot as a kid.

    G'day Tanny,

I just tried the link you've included above (which is correct) in FireFox3, Google Chrome & Internet Explorer7 all on Windows Vista 64, and all working fine.

What browser are you using, and do you have a recent version of Flash installed? Perhaps update your Flash install at: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

    Thanks, Aaron.
