New to Zenfolio - Question and Site

    Hi Everyone,

I just finished my 2 week trial to Zenfolio and upgraded my account to premium. I have been a long term user of Pbase but for the last year or so I have been looking into moving away from it. Zenfolio seems to have made great strides in the last year to prompt me to do this. I was hoping to get 2 things from this post:

    1. Please C&C my website and provide pointers on things you see may not be working correctly: www.bethexplorer.com

    2. I have been trying to mask the Zenfolio in the webaddress but for some reason am not able to do it. Even when I type www.bethexplorer.com, it takes me to the correct website but the address on the top changes to www.bethexplorer.zenfolio.com.  If  anyone can provide an idea about how I could resolve this?

    Thanks and appreciate your help!

Re: New to Zenfolio - Question and Site

1 - everything looks good, your logo does confuse me a bit, I see what you are trying to do with it relate it to your domain name, but looks a bit confusing.

2 - You have setup a custom domain name for your site and point it to your zenfolio page...instructions below from the Preferences section of your zenfolio

How to set up a custom domain

Configuring custom domain is a two step process:

    1. You need to setup a new CNAME record at the place where you registered your domain. Examples of such registrars are Network Solutions, GoDaddy, Register.com, 1&1, Yahoo, and others.

Check with your registrar for the exact procedure but adding a CNAME usually involves editing DNS configuration and pointing a subdomain to www.zenfolio.com.

For example, to point photos.yourdomain.com to www.zenfolio.com, you need to create the following CNAME record in yourdomain.com:

      photos CNAME www.zenfolio.com.

If you want your entire domain to go to your Zenfolio pages, you would need to create an A record pointing to our current IP address:

      @ A 64.62.158.18
    2. The last step is to enable the checkbox above, add your domain name, and Save. If you have created a CNAME for something like photos.yourdomain.com, then you should add above photos.yourdomain.com.

The entire process may take up to 48 hours to propagate everywhere, so please be patient.

TIP: If you would like for both yourdomain.com and www.yourdomain.com to go to your Zenfolio pages, you need to setup both an A record and a CNAME record, but only www.yourdomain.com needs to be entered below. Once you do that, Zenfolio will automatically recognize yourdomain.com as a legitimate address as well.

Re: New to Zenfolio - Question and Site

Thanks! I tried everything and in the preferences in zenfolio when I choose my domain www.bethexplorer.com, it says that it is configured correctly. When I save it, it saves fine but after that my website is not opening up at all. It just shows up as a blank page.

As soon as I revert back to using bethexplorer.zenfolio.com, the website shows up correctly. So I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Do I need to wait for a while after I save the preferences in Zenfolio for my website to appear?

Let me know, Thanks for the help!

Re: New to Zenfolio - Question and Site

After you make the change IE: setup the cName or A record to use your domain name the change can take 12 to 24 hours for the change to take effect, I'm thinking you may not of give it enough time for the DNS's to change.

Site looks good but I agree the logo is a little confusing, and the font is hard to read.

Re: New to Zenfolio - Question and Site

It seems that bethexplorer.com is set up correctly and points to ZF. But www.bethexplorer.com is pointing to a different IP-address. It depends on your domain hosting provider how this is done. If you need more detailed instructions ask support of your domain hosting provider or tell us who it is.

After both bethexplorer.com AND www.bethexplorer.com point to Zenfolio then you should be able to enter www.bethexplorer.com within the domain preferences on your ZF-account.

    Thanks iMac and Harald!

Based on Harald's response I was able to resolve my issue. Now, www.bethexplorer.com is working as expected. My domain is registered with godaddy.com btw.

I will rework the logo to see if I can make it more readable.

imac, which fonts were you referring to when you said that they are a little unreadable? Please let me know and I will look into that as well.

Thanks for all your help guys!

Glad you were able to get the domains working proper, the font that you are using in the name top right side, some of the letters are hard to tell what they are...like the "V" and "I" like at quick glance the "U's" & the "V" look the same. It might seem picky but I feel that Site Name's & Logo's should be easy to read, I have been working on mine and still not liking it 100% but we will get there one day.

Re: New to Zenfolio - Question and Site

Just in case someone lands here after doing a search in the forums, check for the latest versions of the zf instructions under "Preferences" in your zf page.

One big difference I just discovered today is that the CNAME now needs to be pointed to custom.zenfolio.com and not www.zenfolio.com as was the case when the second message in this thread was originally posted.
